Lets go through what I believe was an important part of making the OT great:
A Sense of Ina-scape-ability:
By that I meant that the Force that challenged the Protagonists (The Empire) was so vast that the rebellion was constantly on the run. It made a feeling that if the Empire found them, shit would get real. It was intimidating because there was no place to hide except for cracks and the conflict was ongoing.
A light Hearted Tone:
It speaks for itself really. The tone was light hearted, but serious. We knew that the Empire hurt people on a personal scale (Death of Lukes Uncle, and Aunt) but also in a mass scale as well (Death Star). But it didn't focus on the brutality and kept a light tone.
It Was a low magic world:
While the force was everywhere, it didn't work like a video game. It didn't give: Force block, Sith lightning, Force speed. It was impressive on its own, and when Yoda demonstrated its power, it wasn't a standard type of thing. It showed us its power by lowering our expectations of what it could do, so showing a small creature lifting a HUGE ship was impressive. So Like Yoda (OT Yoda) might have said:
"Less is More, don't let size deceive you! MMMMHHHMMHHH!"
It Was Realistic:
Now I'm not talking about "Realism" in the sense that all the details of the universe followed the same laws as us. Light sabers shouldn't have existed, and there are no explosions in space. But on a personal level, Luke fought Vader like a real sword fight. It didn't feel like there was so much choreography involved. It felt like a real place.
It told a simple Plot Well:
I wont say that the Plot in the OT is original, but it told it in a detailed way, so that it was complex, but short at the same time. It gave us a one sided villain YES. But that could be later improved on, so that the villains are villainous, but we felt bad for them, and felt somewhat conflicted.
It was an Adventure Film.
This Topic is too large in it of itself to cover in this post.
So Next time: Action Movies VS Adventure Movies
But Im not saying the PT should have kept all those elements, but should have stayed true to them, and felt at least a little bit like them.
Lets see how it Fucked then up:
A Sense of Ina-scape-ability:
The Villains where the rebels now. Thats never a good sign. In addition it was always loosing, always screwing up. So It wasn't scary whatsoever. And whenever Anikin got kinda tired, he could just go to corrusant and watch a theater play. There was no urgency, hell, we dont even know why the villains are bad guys.
A light Hearted Tone:
It suggested rape, brutal decapitations, and child murder all after characters we chouldnt care less about.
It Was a low magic world:
The Force was disposable in nearly every way. It was countable, it gave so much powers, yet nothing original, and none of the happenings in the story felt impressive. Everybody was doing flips and kicks that just felt out of place.
It Was Realistic:
Each side acted stupid, and allot of heavy "Will of the Force", was necessary to cover it up. The Love story really showcases this. And the plot holes, and unrealistic action, really took me out of the movie.
It told a simple Plot Well:
The Plot was about Confusing deceit, enemies that came out of know were, villains that where both annoying, but not distressing or intimidating. And at the end, I couldn't care less who one since each side was corrupt and stupid.
It was an Adventure Film.
